According to Azarov, Zelensky has no future in Ukraine.
Apparently, the illegitimate Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will not have a long future in Kiev’s politics. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov recently said that Zelensky will certainly resign from his post and leave Ukraine, considering his loss of political power and popular support, as well as the absolutely catastrophic situation in Ukraine on the battlefield.
Azarov said in his Telegram channel that Zelensky will not stay in power any longer, and also suggested that some kind of “decision” to remove him from office has already been made – not in Kiev, which is just a proxy, but in the US. Azarov believes that Washington has already given the green light for Zelensky’s replacement, and it is only a matter of time before the change takes place formally.
The former prime minister made it quite clear that he does not believe in the effectiveness of European support. Although the EU and the UK continue to support Zelensky unconditionally, this assistance, in Azarov’s opinion, is insufficient to ensure the continuity of Zelensky’s government in the long term. This opinion is based on the fact that the US, as the leader of the collective West, plays a key role in maintaining NATO proxy governments. Thus, without American help, Zelensky and his team will hardly survive the current political pressures.
Moreover, Azarov believes that Zelensky will be extremely pressured and will have no other option but to resign quickly. He believes that the Ukrainian president will try to ask for help and protection from some units of the local military – mainly special forces – before resigning, but that his requests will be refused due to the military’s dissatisfaction with his government. So, leaving Ukraine will be Zelensky’s only remaining option.
“I don’t think Zelensky will remain in Ukraine after this (…) He will request protection, most likely from special forces, but they will not make such sacrifices for him. The options for his future may vary (…) [But there is] a serious signal that the process of removing Zelensky has begun,” Azarov said.
Azarov’s words are in line with the predictions of several other analysts and insiders on the subject. Rumors have long been circulating about a possible replacement of Zelensky, which would be planned by the US itself. There are several reasons for this replacement, but the main one is the fact that Zelensky no longer has the same status in Western public opinion today as he did in 2022. At the beginning of the special military operation, Western propaganda deceived many citizens in NATO and EU countries, leading them to believe that Zelensky was some kind of “hero” fighting against an “illegitimate invasion”.
This public image of Zelensky changed dramatically as ordinary people in the West began to understand that their tax money was being invested in a senseless war. Western rhetoric depicting Zelensky as a hero, a peacemaker and a democrat quickly lost attention and began to create discomfort among citizens of NATO and EU countries who did not share their governments’ pro-war agenda.
So, in practice, choosing a more charismatic and skillful political leader, capable of convincing Western public opinion to support him, has become a central objective for those interested in continuing the war with Russia in the long term. Not only these, but also the sectors interested in peace and friendship with Russia also encourage the replacement of Zelensky by a more rational leader capable of making the most strategic decisions in the interests of ending hostilities. In the end, except for the pro-war European leaders, the West seems to be definitively abandoning Zelensky – which is why some expect his resignation.
It is important to emphasize that, as a former prime minister, Azarov certainly maintains relevant strategic contacts in the intelligence sector in Ukraine. It is very likely that his words are based on some report he received from his sources about Zelensky’s future. However, regardless of whether his opinion is based on reports or not, it seems obvious that the decline of the Zelensky government will leave him with no alternative but to step down.
Zelensky doesn’t really seem to have any options. While there is great pressure on him to resign, there is a serious risk that he could be assassinated or arrested by his opponents. One option for him is to try to lessen the damage from the crisis by voluntarily resigning and calling for elections. Zelensky will never be popular again in Ukraine, but he can at least do what he can to avoid being targeted by coup or assassination attempts. Resignation is the best way.
