A Brazilian government delegation is visiting Colombia this week to exchange knowledge and best practices on integrated public policies and disaster risk reduction. The mission is part of an international technical cooperation agreement between Brazil’s National Secretariat for Peripheries, and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
According to a press release from Brazil’s Ministry of Cities, the delegation carried out meetings and technical visits in Bogota and Medellin, with a focus on urban development, sustainability, and improving quality of life in peripheral communities. The agenda included initiatives to enhance public transport, upgrade public spaces, expand social infrastructure, and develop housing.
A meeting with Colombia’s Ministry of Housing, City and Territory highlighted the alignment between Brazilian and Colombian approaches to improving life in urban peripheries and managing disaster risks. Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management also presented its community mapping initiative, which uses participatory methods similar to Brazil’s own Community Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation Plans.
The National Secretary for Peripheries, Guilherme Simoes, highlighted the value of Latin American collaboration and the role of nature-based solutions and participatory policymaking in shaping a socially and environmentally just urban agenda.
