The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting has started at the Itamaraty Palace. It is the group’s first official event since its enlargement and is also attended by partner countries.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, who is coordinating the meeting, in an interview with BRICS Brasil emphasised the importance of the event for Brazil. He said BRICS is “an extremely important manifestation of multilateral cooperation” and a platform for the development of countries in the Global South.
“We hope to present concrete results to the upcoming Indian presidency,” the Brazilian Foreign Minister added.
On the same day, bilateral talks were held during the BRICS Ministerial Council meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The parties praised the level of Russian-Chinese relations, discussed the implementation of the agreements between the leaders of the two countries, as well as preparations for the official visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia. Special attention was paid to coordination in the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS, and other international formats.
Lavrov also held talks with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedeon Timothewos. The Foreign Ministers reaffirmed the focus on the development of multidisciplinary bilateral cooperation, including in international forums. They also supported further strengthening of the legal foundations of a multipolar world.
