China is set to host a series of international equestrian events in 2025 as part of efforts to boost the sport’s popularity across the country. The Chinese Equestrian Association announced that the Jumping World Cup China League will begin its new season in Beijing from 24 to 27 April, followed by a competition in Wuhan from 30 May to 2 June.
Another youth-focused event, the Jumping World Challenge, will take place in Dongguan from 11 to 13 April. According to the Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS, the event is aimed to help to develop young talent for future competitions, for example, for the 2026 Youth Olympics.
Chinese equestrian sports have seen significant progress in recent years, with notable achievements including two gold medals at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The sport’s expansion is evident in the rapid increase of equestrian clubs across China, which have grown from just 907 in 2016 to over 2,800 today. Cultural perceptions are also changing, with equestrianism becoming more popular in cities despite traditional views of horses as work animals in rural areas.
Looking ahead, Chinese officials and athletes hope that hosting international events will help raise the level of domestic competition and attract more young participants. The Jumping World Cup China League will conclude its 2025 season in Chengdu in December, with plans to continue the series through 2028.
