The Chinese space station is set to host a scientific experiment featuring planarians, flatworms renowned for their extraordinary regenerative abilities, according to the Technology and Engineering Centre for Space Utilisation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Planarians, organisms with an evolutionary history spanning over 520 million years, are a staple in biological research due to their unparalleled capacity for tissue regeneration.
When divided, these creatures can regenerate muscles, skin, intestines, and even an entire brain from each segment – a process they can repeat indefinitely.
Researchers aim to investigate how the unique environment of space impacts the regenerative processes and physiological behaviour of planarians. Additionally, the experiment will delve into the molecular mechanisms underlying the influence of microgravity on tissue regeneration.
Experts believe that these insights could significantly advance knowledge in regenerative biology and shed light on cellular mechanisms related to human ageing and longevity.
