China has announced a national plan to build and upgrade 300,000 kilometres of rural roads by 2027, aiming to enhance connectivity, improve road safety and support rural revitalisation, as reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.
The new round of the rural road improvement action plan, jointly issued by the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Natural Resources, outlines the construction of a modern, inclusive, and efficient rural transport network.
Alongside new road building, a further 300,000 kilometres of existing rural roads will undergo restorative maintenance, ensuring that more than 70 per cent remain in good technical condition. The plan also calls for 150,000 kilometres of safety upgrades and the renovation of around 9,000 hazardous bridges.
By 2027, over 55 per cent of administrative villages are expected to have access to public bus services. Counties meeting certain conditions will be encouraged to integrate rural passenger, freight, and postal services.
All of China’s 30,000-plus townships and over 500,000 administrative villages are now linked by paved roads, with 97.3 per cent meeting technical standards.
Officials note that improved rural transport has transformed mobility, boosted tourism and supported new business opportunities such as agritourism, farm produce sales, and e-commerce.
Authorities say the upgraded infrastructure is also creating local jobs in road maintenance, helping residents earn a living while contributing to the sustainability of the network.
