Ethiopia has announced that national health service coverage is now surpassing 95 per cent, according to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health. The update was shared during a public health forum held in Addis Ababa, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Health Minister Mekdes Daba credited the milestone to sustained investment in infrastructure and the government’s commitment to expanding access to essential services across the country. She described the nationwide progress as a reflection of the government’s long-term strategic planning and health system strengthening.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, who also addressed the forum, highlighted the impact of Ethiopia’s community-based health insurance initiative, which now benefits more than 63 million people. The scheme, launched to ensure equitable access to healthcare, is regarded as a key pillar in the country’s universal health coverage ambitions.
The Ministry of Health reported that the programme’s success is partly attributed to the implementation of an income-based contribution model. This approach has enabled low-income citizens to gain access to medical services that would otherwise be financially out of reach.
