GITIS dedicates new issue of Theatre Magazine to backstage of performances

The Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS, a partner of TV BRICS, has presented a new issue of Theatre Magazine. The theme of this edition is theatre designers and production crews.

The editorial board has compiled photo reports on the creation of both premieres and long-running productions at Moscow theatres. Among them are “Arcadia” at the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop Theatre, “Suicide” at the Moscow Art Theatre named after A. P. Chekhov, “Forest” at the Mayakovsky Theatre, “Pic Nic or Tales of the Old Raven” at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre, “The Black Hen” at the Russian Academic Youth Theatre (RAMT), and “The Imaginary Invalid” at the Maly Theatre, which has concluded its 20-year run.

Each photo report is accompanied by comments from directors, designers, lighting technicians, and other participants in the process. The issue’s motto is the phrase “Everyone makes the performance.” The cover features a stage machinist of the Mayakovsky Theatre at work on the production of “Forest”.

The issue also includes an interview with Olga Medvedeva, Associate Professor at the Department of Scenic Design Technology at the Moscow Art Theatre School, and Sergey Shpagin, an Honoured Cultural Worker of Russia, as well as reviews of performances from Moscow, Novosibirsk, and Nizhny Novgorod.

A recurring character throughout the issue is a drawn turtle, moving between performances and observing the creation of theatrical magic.

Theatre Magazine has been published since April 2023. The project is supported by the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives and the GITIS Theatre Education Support and Development Fund.
