Nicaragua has taken delivery of a batch of yellow fever vaccines, produced by the Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immunobiological Drugs of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The mosquito-borne disease, transmitted by Aedes aegypti, remains a public health concern in parts of the Americas.
The shipment was facilitated with the backing of the Latin American Institute of Biotechnology Mechnikov, based in Nicaragua, according to Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
The doses will be deployed in a nationwide immunisation drive announced by the country’s vice president, Rosario Murillo. Priority recipients will include healthcare workers, border agents, and tourism industry staff.
The campaign comes amid tightened public health surveillance measures, as several South American nations report rising numbers of yellow fever cases.
