Chinese scientists create world’s most advanced brain-inspired computer

Chinese scientists have developed the world’s most advanced brain-inspired computing system, capable of mimicking the neural complexity of a macaque monkey’s brain. This is reported by Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

Created by the State Key Laboratory of Brain-Machine Intelligence at Zhejiang University, the machine operates with over two billion spiking neurons and more than 100 billion synapses, consuming just 2,000 watts of power, a fraction of what traditional supercomputers require for similar processing capabilities.

The system is powered by 960 neuromorphic chips, each capable of supporting more than 2.35 million spiking neurons and hundreds of millions of synapses. These third-generation processors were co-developed with Zhejiang Lab and are built into 15 blade-style servers. Together, they form a highly efficient, parallel computing infrastructure that mirrors the architecture and energy efficiency of biological neural networks. 

Designed with a custom instruction set and online learning capabilities, the machine also runs a new-generation brain-inspired operating system. According to lead researcher Pan Gang, the system is already being used for complex tasks such as logical reasoning, content generation, and mathematical problem-solving. 

Researchers see this development as a new computational paradigm, offering transformative potential in fields ranging from neuroscience to artificial intelligence.
